During the summer of 2022 Kayla participated in an internship sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Tennessee Historical Society, doing research and archival work relating to Tennessee history and the women’s suffrage movement in the upper Cumberland counties. Part of her duties as a summer intern were to reorganize and catalog the extensive archives of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, the Historical Society’s official journal publication. She reduced the number of archived copies of Quarterly issues down to twenty-five each (with the exception of special editions) and updated a running inventory list as she went, counting every single issue of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly from the start of publication in 1896 til the most recent 2022 issues. She also wrote two articles for the Historical Society’s online blog and a book review for the Tennessee Historical Quarterly. Pictured left is the entrance to the Historical Society's offices and archives.

Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site
During 2020 and 2021, while working at Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site as an AmeriCorps Service Member, Kayla assisted the site in deaccessioning surplus artifacts from the Mary Hardin McCown Archives collection. She also entered the archival catalogue into museum software program PastPerfect and updated the site's official document along side it to keep track of her changes. In addition to her archival work, she also reorganized the historic site's Taylor Library to improve its capacity for public research. Pictured right is the historic Tipton-Haynes house.
